Footprint Acquires PE-Free Paper Cup Technology to Expand Sustainable Packaging
Sustainable packaging company Footprint has acquired Transcend Packaging’s PE-free paper cup technology, adding a recyclable and home-compostable hot and cold beverage cup solution to its growing portfolio of environmentally friendly packaging products.
The acquired technology replaces the traditional polyethylene (PE) lining used in conventional paper cups with a mineral-based coating, allowing the cups, lids, and straws to be recycled through existing paper recycling systems while also being suitable for home composting. According to the company, the packaging has been independently tested to meet recognized standards for recyclability, compostability, and material composition without compromising product performance.
Corey Berends, Chief Executive Officer of Footprint, said the acquisition strengthens the company’s ability to deliver practical alternatives to plastic-lined paper cups at a time when businesses are seeking packaging solutions that meet evolving sustainability regulations. He added that the technology supports Footprint’s mission of reducing plastic waste while promoting healthier solutions for people and the environment.
As part of the agreement, Footprint and Transcend Packaging will establish a manufacturing partnership to ensure uninterrupted supply across Europe. Transcend will continue producing the paper cups for Footprint customers at its manufacturing facility in Wales while maintaining service for customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Footprint also plans to expand production through its facility in Poland as part of a broader European growth strategy before introducing the technology to North American markets. The company expects the acquisition to accelerate adoption of recyclable paper cup solutions across multiple industries.
The transaction also brings Transcend Packaging co-founders Lorenzo Angelucci and Gabriel Fysh into Footprint’s leadership team. Angelucci has been appointed President of Footprint Europe, while Fysh will serve as Managing Director of Business Development Europe, focusing on customer growth and market expansion.
Angelucci said the partnership combines Transcend’s proven paper cup innovation with Footprint’s manufacturing capabilities and global customer network, creating greater opportunities to deliver sustainable packaging solutions that reduce the environmental impact of single-use beverage packaging.
The acquisition reflects the growing industry shift toward plastic-free, fiber-based packaging, as manufacturers increasingly invest in recyclable and compostable alternatives that support circular economy goals and comply with tightening environmental regulations worldwide.
