Koehler Group Expands Paper Packaging Testing Capabilities to Speed Sustainable Innovation
Koehler Group has strengthened its paper-based packaging development capabilities by installing a Rovema BVC 260 vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) machine at its Koehler Innovation and Technology center in Oberkirch. The new installation enables the company to evaluate recyclable paper packaging under real production conditions, helping accelerate product development and reduce time-to-market.
The Rovema machine complements Koehler’s existing pilot-scale facilities, which already include a test coating machine. Together, the expanded setup allows researchers to manufacture paper-based packaging prototypes, assess their performance on commercial packaging equipment, and optimize materials before moving to full-scale production.
Christian Kölmel, Corporate Director of Technology at Koehler Innovation and Technology, said the investment strengthens the connection between material development and packaging applications while expanding the company’s technical expertise. He added that the integrated testing environment is expected to shorten development cycles and lower market launch risks.
Fritz Brümmer, Head of the Specialty Paper and Process Development Department, said the enhanced pilot system will help the company extract more value from testing, improve product quality and safety, and accelerate innovation.
Founded in 2019, Koehler Innovation and Technology employs more than 120 researchers focused on developing recyclable paper-based packaging materials and advancing sustainable technologies. The team combines fundamental research, applied development, and innovative engineering to create packaging solutions designed for circular economy applications.

He noted that the objective is to deliver recyclable paper packaging solutions that meet brand requirements while ensuring compatibility with modern packaging machinery.
The investment comes as demand for paper-based flexible packaging continues to grow globally. Brands are increasingly replacing difficult-to-recycle plastic materials with renewable, fiber-based alternatives that can be recycled through existing paper waste streams, driven by tightening sustainability regulations and evolving consumer expectations.
