Paranova Introduces FibreFresh Paper Punnets for Flavourfresh Tomalina Tomatoes

UK-based grower Flavourfresh has adopted FibreFresh paper-based punnets developed by Paranova for its limited-edition Tomalina tomato range, now available in Asda stores during the summer season.

The move replaces traditional plastic packaging with recyclable paper punnets designed specifically for fresh produce. The FibreFresh solution aims to maintain product freshness by supporting natural respiration and transpiration control while offering a more sustainable alternative to conventional formats.

The transition follows a £500,000 investment in Boix punnet-forming machinery, enabling Paranova to expand into heat-sealed paper punnet production. This builds on the company’s existing capabilities in nested tray packaging.

Paranova stated that it collaborated closely with Flavourfresh throughout the development process, covering design, testing, print execution, and retail rollout. The company is also preparing to launch FastFlex, a tray and lidding system designed for fresh produce and convenience foods.

According to Paranova, FastFlex will significantly reduce lead times by delivering lidding supply in under seven days, compared to traditional print cycles of two to four weeks. The system is aimed at retailers and growers managing seasonal demand shifts, short production windows, and promotional campaigns.

The FastFlex platform will be produced using a newly commissioned press designed for filmic paper-based tray applications. Paranova claims this will position it as the only UK manufacturer offering both paper-based punnet and lidding solutions within a rapid-response system for fresh produce packaging.

Michael Conway, Chief Commercial Officer at Paranova, said the new punnet technology delivers a significant reduction in plastic usage while also improving on-shelf differentiation, operational efficiency, and sustainability performance.
