Blue Ocean Closures Unveils Integrated Fibre Screw Closure Range for Paper Packaging

Blue Ocean Closures has introduced its latest innovation, the Paper-Plug range, a new integrated fibre-based opening and dispensing solution designed for carton and corrugated board packaging.

The system features an internal fibre screw closure that directly interfaces with board-based packaging structures, enabling functionality that traditionally required glass, metal, or plastic components. The company says the technology opens up new possibilities for packaging design, consumer convenience, and product differentiation.

The Paper-Plug concept is targeted at applications such as dry and frozen foods, cleaning products, refill and reuse systems, and hybrid board-based packaging formats. It is also expected to reduce dependence on fossil-based materials while offering potential improvements in carbon footprint and sustainability performance.

Blue Ocean Closures plans to make the Paper-Plug system available for both standardized solutions and collaborative development with brands, converters, and technology partners to accelerate adoption in sustainable packaging ecosystems.

According to Staffan Andersson, CTO of Blue Ocean Closures, traditional paper packaging has been limited in functionality, especially in areas requiring advanced opening and resealing systems. He stated that Paper-Plug expands the potential of paper packaging by combining sustainability with usability and design flexibility.

Earlier this year, Dutch nutraceutical company Live Puri adopted fibre-based caps from Blue Ocean Closures for its vitamin packaging to reduce CO₂ emissions. The company’s NutraCap solution is recyclable as paper and made from renewable fibres.

In a related development, PulPac has also introduced next-generation Dry Molded Fiber caps developed with PA Consulting and Optima, aimed at replacing plastic closures and improving branding and user experience. Early testing shows strong performance in sealing, threading, and usability.
