Somfy, in collaboration with International Paper company DS Smith, has introduced a new recyclable corrugated cardboard packaging solution for roller shutter motors, replacing traditional polystyrene (EPS) inserts used during transportation.

The new packaging system has been developed and deployed at scale as part of Somfy’s ongoing strategy to increase the use of sustainable, recyclable, and circular packaging materials across its operations. The initiative focuses on reducing plastic usage while maintaining product protection standards during storage and distribution.

The project was designed jointly by DS Smith’s France-based innovation and design teams along with Somfy. The solution uses Kraft EE (Electrical Grade) corrugated board inserts, engineered to securely hold roller shutter motors while ensuring safe transit conditions.

According to DS Smith France Packaging Sales, Marketing and Innovation Director Benjamin Chedal, the development reflects the company’s commitment to helping customers adopt more sustainable packaging systems. He noted that the solution has been adapted across multiple Somfy product formats, highlighting its flexibility, modular design, and long-term usability.

The packaging design can accommodate 34 different motor lengths and is compatible with four box formats, helping to simplify logistics and reduce operational complexity. In addition, the switch from expanded polystyrene to corrugated board reduces storage requirements, as cardboard takes up significantly less warehouse space.

Following successful trial runs, the packaging system has now moved into full-scale operational use and is being implemented in day-to-day shipping processes.

Somfy Project Manager Tony Faure stated that eco-design and sustainability remain central to the company’s decarbonisation strategy. He added that the collaboration with DS Smith marks an important step toward more environmentally responsible packaging that improves recyclability without compromising product protection or handling efficiency.

In related developments, DS Smith recently announced investments of over €14 million in its production network in Romania. The largest share, around €10.5 million, is allocated to its Timișoara facility, scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2027, while an additional €3.6 million investment is planned for its Ghimbav site in 2026.
