Sitma Launches FlatPack to Replace Plastic in Furniture Packaging

Sitma has launched FlatPack, an automated paper-based packaging solution designed to replace plastic wrapping for furniture panels in industrial production and distribution environments.

Developed in collaboration with a leading global furniture manufacturer, FlatPack combines paper-based packaging with automated production to help furniture manufacturers reduce plastic consumption while maintaining product protection, operational efficiency and logistics performance.

The system uses fit-to-size, continuous-motion paper wrapping to create compact and secure packs while reducing packaging material usage. Its inward-folded wrapping design also supports optimized palletization, helping manufacturers improve space utilization and handling stability throughout the supply chain.

Automated Packaging for Furniture Panels

FlatPack is designed to integrate multiple packaging operations into a single automated workflow. In addition to wrapping furniture panels, the system can insert instruction manuals, leaflets, hardware toolboxes and assembly kits, ensuring that all components remain securely contained within the finished package.

Sitma said the system is engineered for consistent performance across production, storage, transportation and retail environments. The paper-based packaging provides product protection while delivering a clean and uniform appearance suitable for retail applications.

The solution also turns packaging into a communication platform. By replacing plastic film with printable paper, manufacturers can add product information, assembly instructions, branding and sustainability messaging directly to the packaging, potentially reducing the need for additional printed materials.

Designed for Industrial Production

FlatPack supports automated workflows and can be integrated with existing packaging lines. Its flexible design enables manufacturers to accommodate different furniture panel sizes and production requirements while maintaining consistent packaging performance.

“With this solution, we enable manufacturers to eliminate plastic from primary packaging while maintaining the efficiency, protection, and scalability required in modern production and logistics environments,” said Stefano De Marco, CEO of Tecnau and Sitma.

According to Sitma, FlatPack reflects its focus on developing production-ready packaging technologies that help manufacturers transition toward more sustainable operations without sacrificing industrial productivity.

By combining paper-based materials, automation and logistics optimization, FlatPack positions sustainable packaging as an alternative to conventional plastic wrapping for large-scale furniture manufacturing.
