ITC Completes ₹3,500 Crore Century Pulp Acquisition, Expands Paper Business
ITC has completed the acquisition of Century Pulp and Paper (CPP) from Aditya Birla Real Estate, strengthening its position as India’s largest integrated paperboards and paper company.
ITC said in a regulatory filing that it has completed the acquisition of the pulp and paper business operated as Century Pulp and Paper, including its assets, liabilities, contracts and employees. The transaction was completed as a going concern on a slump-sale basis under the Business Transfer Agreement signed in March 2025.
Valued at ₹3,500 crore, the acquisition is ITC’s largest deal and marks the formal integration of CPP into its paperboards and specialty papers business.
ITC Paper Capacity Rises Above 1.5 Million Tonnes
ITC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Puri described the completion as a defining milestone for the company’s paperboards and specialty papers business.
According to Puri, the acquisition will increase ITC’s scale, strengthen its presence in northern India and expand access to key raw materials and customers.
With the addition of CPP, ITC’s total paper and paperboard capacity will increase by more than 50% to approximately 1.5 million metric tonnes.
“This marks the coming together of two enterprises united by a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, competitiveness and sustainable value creation,” Puri said.
Acquisition Strengthens Sustainable Packaging Position
ITC expects the acquisition to position the company to benefit from rising demand for paperboards, sustainable packaging solutions and alternatives to plastic.
As India’s economy and consumer markets continue to expand, demand for high-quality paper-based packaging is expected to increase across multiple end-use sectors.
ITC said the combined business will be positioned to capture these opportunities through innovation, operational excellence and sustainability.
The company also welcomed CPP employees into the ITC group, with Puri highlighting their experience and expertise as important to the business’s next phase of growth.
ITC Expands Longstanding Paperboard Business
ITC’s paperboard business dates back to 1979, when the company established ITC Bhadrachalam Paperboards.
In 2002, Bhadrachalam Paperboards was merged with ITC, becoming part of its paperboards and specialty papers division. The same year, ITC also consolidated the Tribeni Tissues division into the business.
In 2004, ITC further expanded its paperboard operations through the acquisition of a manufacturing facility near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, from BILT Industrial Packaging Co.
The Century Pulp and Paper acquisition now adds significant capacity and geographic reach, further strengthening ITC’s position in India’s paper and paperboard sector.
Positive Outlook for Paper-Based Packaging
The completion of the acquisition represents a positive development for India’s paper and packaging industry, particularly as demand grows for recyclable and sustainable alternatives to plastic.
By combining greater manufacturing capacity, raw-material access and a stronger nationwide presence, ITC is positioning its paperboards and specialty papers business for further growth in the sustainable packaging market.
