DS Smith Develops Recyclable Corrugated Packaging for Growing Tree Gift Market
DS Smith, an International Paper company and leading provider of fibre-based sustainable packaging solutions, has partnered with Dutch tree gift company Geefeenboompje.nl to develop innovative packaging designed specifically for its growing range of tree gift products.
The newly developed packaging combines sustainability, functionality, and operational efficiency. Made entirely from recyclable corrugated cardboard, the solution has been engineered to improve product protection during transit while supporting the company’s environmental objectives.
A key feature of the design is the incorporation of strategically placed ventilation holes using a die-cut process, ensuring better airflow and aeration for live trees during shipping. The packaging also offers branding and personalization options, including custom logos, messages, and optional paper-based sleeves.
Beyond sustainability benefits, the new packaging enhances packing efficiency and streamlines logistics operations. By optimizing packaging design and material usage, Geefeenboompje.nl expects to reduce handling, storage, and labour costs while improving supply chain performance.
The updated packaging also delivers a more consistent appearance and unboxing experience across the company’s product range, strengthening its brand identity and sustainability messaging.
Founded on the concept of gifting trees to celebrate special occasions, Geefeenboompje.nl has evolved into a leading provider of sustainable gifts for both consumers and businesses. The company has facilitated the planting of more than 300,000 trees and currently serves customers across the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Denmark.
DS Smith stated that the collaboration highlights its commitment to supporting customers through innovative packaging design while advancing circular economy principles. The company continues to focus on delivering sustainable packaging solutions for industries including e-commerce, FMCG, automotive, industrial, and food and beverage sectors.
The partnership demonstrates how packaging innovation can simultaneously improve sustainability, customer experience, and operational efficiency while supporting long-term business growth.
