Mondi launches laser-marked recyclable packaging concept for e-commerce

Global packaging company Mondi has introduced a new packaging concept that combines a corrugated outer box with recyclable, laser-marked flexible packaging, offering brands a more sustainable and adaptable solution for e-commerce and bag-in-box applications.

The concept uses laser marking technology to apply artwork directly onto flexible packaging during the converting process, eliminating the need for traditional decorative printing and printing plates. This enables faster artwork modifications, easier product personalization, and greater flexibility for changing designs without additional printing costs.

Mondi said the technology is compatible with a wide range of flexible packaging formats, including reels, pre-made pouches such as the re/cycle StripPouch, and larger pre-made bags like the re/cycle FlexiBag. These formats are designed with simplified material structures and fewer decorative elements to improve recyclability.

Depending on application requirements, the packaging can also incorporate bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, further supporting sustainability objectives.

According to Mondi’s internal Product Impact Assessment, its bio-based laser-marked StripPouch delivers significant carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission reductions compared with conventional fossil-based printed and laminated stand-up pouches.

The concept also combines Mondi’s corrugated and flexible packaging expertise, enabling customers to source complete bag-in-box packaging systems from a single supplier.

Jens Koesters, manager, technical service, R&D and innovation at Mondi Consumer Flexibles, said customers are facing increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing diverse product portfolios and evolving consumer expectations. He added that the new concept supports circularity through bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility, helping brands respond more quickly to market demands while advancing their circular packaging goals.
