RDM Group Advances Fibre-Based Packaging with Recycled Materials and Circular Solutions

RDM Group is expanding its portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions with fibre-based products that combine recycled content, reduced material use and improved recyclability.

Earlier this year, RDM Group collaborated with Dow to develop Multiboard CirculaRR, a fibre-based food packaging solution that combines RDM’s Vincicoat PLUS recycled cartonboard with advanced recycled polymers.

Designed for applications where product protection and barrier performance are essential, Multiboard CirculaRR is made entirely from recycled inputs. Recycled fibres form the cartonboard core, while a thin layer of recycled polyethylene provides the barrier properties required for food-contact packaging.

The solution can be used for applications including frozen food packaging, fruit trays and dry pet food, where resistance to moisture and other external factors is important.

Low Polymer Content Supports Recyclability

Built on RDM Group’s established Multiboard Barrier platform, Multiboard CirculaRR contains approximately 5% polymer by weight. The low polymer content is intended to support compatibility with existing mixed-paper recycling streams.

The development focuses not only on incorporating recycled materials but also on ensuring that the resulting packaging can be effectively recovered and recycled at the end of its useful life.

The solution has also undergone several independent assessments and certifications. Its plastic component is certified under the ISCC PLUS scheme, confirming the use of recycled feedstock from advanced recycling processes. Food-contact compliance has also been independently verified, while recyclability has been assessed in accordance with the 4evergreen protocol.

Supporting the Shift Towards Circular Packaging

RDM Group says Multiboard CirculaRR can help brands and converters prepare for evolving packaging legislation, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

With the regulation targeting recyclable packaging by 2030 alongside increased recycled-content requirements, packaging manufacturers are under growing pressure to balance product performance with circularity.

By combining recycled fibre, recycled polymers and a design intended for existing paper recycling systems, Multiboard CirculaRR aims to provide a solution that addresses performance, regulatory compliance and resource efficiency without compromising product protection.

The collaboration also demonstrates the role of value-chain partnerships in developing more circular packaging. RDM Group’s fibre expertise, combined with advanced polymer technology, has enabled the development of a packaging structure that integrates different material technologies while maintaining a fibre-based approach.

Vincicoat PLUS Strengthens RDM Group’s Recycled Cartonboard Portfolio

Multiboard CirculaRR forms part of RDM Group’s broader innovation strategy focused on circularity, recycled content and material efficiency.

Another key development is Vincicoat PLUS, a next-generation coated recycled cartonboard engineered to provide up to 15–20% greater strength than standard grades.

Its enhanced structural performance can enable packaging manufacturers to achieve up to 20% weight reduction while maintaining pack strength and product protection. Alternatively, the additional strength can be used to improve packaging performance at the same grammage.

The Vincicoat PLUS range also includes a hard-sized grade designed for low water absorbency and demanding applications, including frozen products such as pizza, ice cream and other frozen foods.

By enabling lighter packaging and maximizing the use of recycled fibre, Vincicoat PLUS can help reduce material consumption, resource demand and logistics-related impacts.

Together, Multiboard CirculaRR and Vincicoat PLUS highlight RDM Group’s approach to developing fibre-based packaging that combines recycled materials, improved performance and recyclability while helping brands and converters respond to the evolving requirements of the circular packaging economy.
