Yangi Expands Fibre Packaging Line into US Foodservice Market
Swedish packaging technology company Yangi is expanding into the US market with a range of fibre-based packaging products designed for the quick-service restaurant (QSR) and foodservice sectors.
The company’s portfolio includes plates, bowls, drink lids and takeaway trays for converters and brand owners serving the fast-food and foodservice markets. Yangi plans to showcase the range to US customers at PACK EXPO International.
The US expansion forms part of Yangi’s wider international growth strategy and is supported in part by a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency announced earlier this year.
Dry-Forming Technology
Yangi’s products are manufactured using Cellera, the company’s dry-forming platform for fibre packaging. Unlike conventional wet moulding, the process does not rely on a water-based slurry, eliminating several drying stages and reducing the need for associated infrastructure and production space.
According to Yangi, Cellera can reduce process water consumption by 90% to 99% compared with conventional wet-moulding processes, as the forming stage does not require water.
The company also reports energy consumption of approximately 1.8 kWh/kg, compared with a stated 4–7 kWh/kg range for conventional wet moulding.
From Development to Commercial Production
Yangi founder Anna Altner said the Cellera technology has progressed from development to industrial-scale production and is already operating at a converter’s manufacturing facility in Europe.
The platform has been commissioned at the production site of a European converter, which Yangi describes as a commercial operating environment rather than a laboratory setting.
Yangi has also conducted customer trials at its technical centre in Varberg, Sweden, where its dry-formed takeaway trays were tested in a live foodservice environment through a collaboration with Swedish food-truck and catering company Flavor Boss.
Focus on Sustainable Foodservice Packaging
Yangi said its fibre packaging solutions are designed to meet growing demand for renewable and more sustainable alternatives in foodservice applications.
The company highlights the use of FSC-certified, PFAS-free fibre materials and says its products have demonstrated curbside recyclability.
Yangi Chief Commercial Officer Hanna Rüdel said the technology offers US converters a renewable fibre packaging platform that can be deployed at scale while delivering the performance required for foodservice applications.
With its US market entry, Yangi aims to make its dry-forming technology more widely available to converters and brands seeking fibre-based solutions for the growing quick-service and foodservice packaging market.
