Oji Holdings Corporation  is pleased to announce that it has launched a new initiative in collaboration with J&T Recycling Corporation  to recycle the polyethylene-aluminum layer  derived from aluminum-lined paper containers into logistics pallets.

Aluminum-lined paper containers are used for a wide range of beverages, including soy milk, vegetable juice, and alcohol, and can be stored at room temperature for long periods of time if unopened. To protect the contents from light and oxygen, they also contain layers of polyethylene and aluminum in addition to the paper, making them taboo items that cannot be recycled, and the rate of recycled paper utilization was extremely low.

In February 2024, we began an initiative to separate paper fiber from the poly-aluminum layer and recycle the paper fiber portion into cardboard. However, the poly-aluminum layer is currently disposed of by incineration (thermal recycling).

In this initiative, material recycling of the poly-aluminum layer was made possible by utilizing the facilities, experience, and know-how of J&T Recycling Corporation, which operates a business that recycles plastic waste and plastic containers and packaging into logistics pallets. This is expected to reduce waste and COâ‚‚ emissions, contributing to the realization of a low-carbon, resource-circulating society. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our efforts to build a sustainable society, with an eye toward applying this technology to other materials.
