Unilever Joins PaperFlex Consortium to Advance Paper-Based Flexible Packaging
Unilever has joined the PaperFlex Consortium, an open and voluntary industry initiative focused on accelerating the development of responsibly designed paper-based flexible packaging.
The consortium brings together Unilever and five other global consumer goods manufacturers to collaborate on research and development, aiming to overcome technical and cost barriers that currently limit the wider use of paper-based flexible packaging.
The initiative focuses particularly on markets where flexible plastic packaging is widely used but formal collection and recycling infrastructure remains limited. The goal is to develop paper-based alternatives that can be recyclable as collection systems improve while also offering biodegradability if they unintentionally enter the environment.
Paper-based flexible packaging presents several technical challenges. While paper is widely recyclable and compostable, it has limited barrier properties, can tear during industrial production and does not melt, making effective sealing more difficult. These challenges are particularly important for products requiring strong protection against moisture, grease and other external conditions.
Through PaperFlex, consortium members will jointly fund and conduct trials of technologies designed to deliver product protection, shelf life, consumer usability and compatibility with high-speed manufacturing lines. The collaboration is also intended to reduce duplicated R&D efforts, accelerate promising technologies and help companies respond to emerging packaging regulations.
Unilever has more than doubled its investment in packaging R&D in recent years and has a team of more than 60 material scientists working on paper-based materials and advanced barrier coatings. The company says it has assessed more than 3,000 emerging materials and technologies, including bio-sourced materials, mineral-based solutions and plastic-free coatings.
Unilever has already introduced recyclable paper-based Knorr stock cube wrappers in the UK. The packaging was developed to prevent grease from penetrating the paper while also adapting factory equipment to handle the new format reliably.
The company says there is no single solution for every application, with packaging requirements varying according to product, geography and use conditions. The PaperFlex Consortium aims to address these challenges through shared research, collaboration and economies of scale, helping bring viable paper-based flexible packaging solutions to market more efficiently.
