New carton design adds part number and EAN code to the lid to improve identification, handling and inventory management

Otto Zimmermann GmbH is gradually introducing a redesigned carton for its brake pad range, adding the part number and EAN code to the box lid as well as the side panel.

The packaging change is intended to make product identification easier for workshops, distributors and logistics operators, particularly when cartons are stacked or stored on shelves. The additional labelling provides a second visible identification point, supporting faster inventory checks, order picking and goods receiving.

The company is implementing the new design gradually, using its existing cardboard packaging stock before switching completely to the redesigned cartons. As a result, both the previous and new carton designs will remain in circulation during the transition.

According to Otto Zimmermann, the packaging update does not involve any changes to the brake pads or their technical characteristics. The company’s standard brake pad range and its rd low-dust brake pads are being transitioned to the refreshed packaging.

For packaging converters, the development highlights how relatively small structural and print-design changes can improve the functionality of folding cartons across the distribution chain. Adding critical product information to multiple panels can support warehouse identification, retail visibility and logistics efficiency without requiring a change to the packaged product.

The phased approach also demonstrates how packaging manufacturers and brand owners can manage redesigns while consuming existing carton inventory, reducing unnecessary packaging waste during a transition.

Otto Zimmermann supplies more than 4,000 brake components to over 70 countries and serves automotive manufacturers and the independent aftermarket
