Apple Expands Fiber-Based Packaging to Reduce Plastic Use
Apple is accelerating its transition toward more sustainable packaging by replacing plastic components with fiber-based alternatives as part of its long-term goal to eliminate plastic from product packaging.
The company has introduced a fully fiber-based packaging system designed to replace conventional plastic trays, protective films, cushioning, and closures with paper-based solutions. The new packaging incorporates molded fiber structures, paper-based films, corrugated cushioning, fiber locking mechanisms, and bio-based adhesives, while remaining fully compatible with existing paper recycling systems.
The redesigned packaging has been developed to provide the same level of protection for Apple products during shipping and handling while significantly reducing plastic consumption across the supply chain. Apple has also expanded the use of fiber-based materials beyond retail packaging to supplier packaging, creating greater consistency throughout its manufacturing and distribution operations.
The initiative is part of Apple’s broader environmental strategy to increase the use of recycled and renewable materials across its products and operations. According to the company, recycled materials now make up approximately 30% of the total material used in the products it ships, reflecting continued progress toward its sustainability commitments.
Over the past several years, Apple has steadily reduced the use of plastic in its packaging by introducing molded fiber trays, paper pull tabs, and paper wrapping to replace traditional plastic films across many product lines. The latest fiber-based packaging system marks another milestone in the company’s efforts to reduce environmental impact while advancing more recyclable and renewable packaging solutions.
