DS Smith and BWT Unveil Sustainable Corrugated Transport Box for MACH Water Filters

DS Smith, an International Paper company and leading provider of fibre-based sustainable packaging solutions, has partnered with BWT (Best Water Technology) to develop an innovative corrugated transport box for MACH Water Filters. The new packaging solution is available in two versions and is designed to improve product protection, logistics efficiency, and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

The transport box is specifically engineered for two types of MACH water filters, a next-generation automatic backwash filtration system used to protect domestic water pipes. The packaging securely holds the filters, accessories, and sensitive components while ensuring safe handling during storage and transportation.

Innovative Design Enhances Protection

A standout feature of the packaging is its integrated triangular corrugated insert, which creates a flexible compartment for accessories without requiring additional packaging materials. The insert also elevates the filters away from the bottom of the box, reducing the risk of shock and impact damage during transit.

According to Andreas Koch, Cluster Design & Innovation Manager at DS Smith Austria, the project combined close collaboration with DS Smith’s Circular Design Metrics (CDM) to optimise sustainability across material usage, recyclability, product protection, and overall supply chain efficiency.

Reduced Material Use and Improved Production Efficiency

The transport box is manufactured using durable double-wall corrugated board, providing excellent strength while minimising material consumption and reducing empty space inside the package. The design also integrates easily into BWT’s existing packaging lines, simplifying production.

Andreas Weißenbacher, CEO of BWT Austria, said the new packaging complements the company’s sustainable manufacturing approach by reducing plastic components, conserving resources, and improving production efficiency through a simplified converting process.

Award-Winning Sustainable Packaging

The natural brown corrugated board with white flexographic printing provides an attractive branding surface while maintaining a sustainable appearance. The packaging solution was recognised with a 2026 WorldStar Global Packaging Award in the Household category for its innovative construction, strong product protection, and environmentally responsible design.

The collaboration highlights how fibre-based packaging innovations can help manufacturers improve sustainability, reduce material usage, and enhance supply chain performance while delivering reliable protection for high-value products.
