Amcor has announced an expansion of its collaboration with Metsä Group and G. Mondini to advance fibre-based packaging solutions for the food industry.

The partnership focuses on developing an innovative tray system aimed at protein and chilled ready-meal applications, combining sustainability with high performance.

The new packaging solution will be showcased at Interpack, one of Europe’s leading packaging exhibitions, scheduled from 7 to 13 May in Germany. Designed for seamless integration into existing production lines, the system has been optimised through close collaboration between Amcor’s development team and G. Mondini, ensuring efficient operation on the Trave Streamline machine widely used by meat and food manufacturers.

At the core of the solution is a fully integrated fibre-based tray paired with a lightweight barrier liner and top web. This combination is engineered to maintain food safety standards while extending shelf life, addressing the increasing demand for environmentally responsible packaging alternatives.

The tray is made using Muoto, a moulded fibre technology developed by Metsä Group’s innovation arm, Metsä Spring. Produced from renewable wood sourced from northern forests, the material is recyclable and designed to offer both durability and sustainability. Amcor enhances the structure with advanced barrier films tailored to different food preservation needs.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the packaging system supports convenience features such as microwaveability, oven use, and easy-peel functionality, making it suitable for modern ready-meal consumption trends.

The Trave Streamline system from G. Mondini further improves efficiency by allowing trays to pass through the sealing process with reduced friction. It also enables direct digital printing on fibre trays, giving brands greater flexibility in design and stronger shelf appeal while retaining a natural look.

Industry leaders from all three companies emphasised that the collaboration demonstrates how combining expertise in materials, barrier technology, and machinery can deliver a fully integrated, scalable solution. The partnership aims to simplify adoption for manufacturers while meeting the growing expectations of consumers and retailers for sustainable, high-performance packaging.
