Coram CVS Specialty Infusion Services has introduced a recyclable, paper-based packaging solution designed for temperature-sensitive medications, marking a shift away from expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as Styrofoam.

The new packaging aims to streamline operations, logistics, and workflow efficiency while reducing plastic usage and waste in pharmaceutical deliveries. By optimizing storage space and simplifying handling, the solution supports both environmental and operational improvements.

Jenny McColloch, chief sustainability officer and vice president of Community Impact at CVS Health, highlighted the impact of the initiative, noting that replacing hard-to-recycle materials with compostable and recyclable alternatives helps cut waste, enhance the patient experience, and eliminate thousands of pounds of plastic annually. She added that the innovation aligns with the company’s broader Healthy 2030 sustainability strategy.

Coram, which provides specialty infusion and nutrition therapies for patients with chronic and complex conditions, previously relied on bulky EPS coolers that were often difficult for patients to handle, store, or dispose of. The newly developed packaging addresses these challenges with a more user-friendly design.

Engineered to meet strict temperature control and durability standards, the solution incorporates a “nested box” design that consolidates deliveries into a single, compact package. It is easier to break down and can be either recycled or composted, improving accessibility for patients, including those with mobility limitations.

Tom Underkoffler, executive director of Logistics and Packaging at CVS Health, said the company is exploring opportunities to expand this approach to other areas, emphasizing the value of cross-functional collaboration in achieving sustainable innovation.

The packaging has already been rolled out in select U.S. locations, including Mendota Heights, Malvern, and San Diego.
