RS South Africa Advances Sustainable Packaging Through Global Plastic Reduction Initiative

RS South Africa is strengthening its commitment to reducing plastic waste by aligning with the RS Group’s global Plastic Out programme. This initiative is a core component of the Group’s 2030 ESG strategy, focused on cutting emissions, minimising waste, and transforming packaging practices across its global operations and supply chain.

As sustainability expectations grow among customers, RS is re-evaluating packaging design, sourcing, and usage to balance environmental responsibility with efficiency and product protection. For customers in South Africa, this global initiative offers access to tested, scalable solutions that support their own sustainability goals.

Global innovations driving change

Across its international network, RS Group has already introduced several impactful packaging innovations that serve as benchmarks for sustainable practices:

  • Bio-based polymer carriers: At its Corby facility in the UK, RS introduced bio-based carriers for electronics packaging, developed with Chestnut Biopolymers Ltd. Made through sugar fermentation and advanced blending technology, these materials deliver durability without creating microplastic waste. Since mid-2025, over 100,000 units have been deployed, replacing around 80% of traditional polypropylene packaging.
  • Paper-based sealing solutions: In Europe, distribution centres in Bad Hersfeld and Beauvais have adopted FSC-certified paper sealing tape in collaboration with Tesa. This innovation allows cartons to be recycled without removing plastic tape, improving recyclability while maintaining operational efficiency and a premium unboxing experience.
  • Eliminating plastic infill: RS has also transitioned from plastic infill materials to paper-based alternatives across UK packing operations. This shift has eliminated approximately 15 tonnes of plastic while maintaining packaging performance. The paper infill contains 50% recycled content, is FSC certified, and integrates seamlessly into existing processes.

Local impact in South Africa

Leveraging these global successes, RS South Africa is exploring how similar solutions can be adapted to local conditions, taking into account market demands, operational requirements, and national sustainability priorities.

De Wet Joubert, Operations & Strategic Projects Director at RS South Africa, emphasised that sustainable packaging is now a necessity rather than a choice, noting that the company is fast-tracking the adoption of globally proven solutions to deliver responsible and efficient packaging to its customers.

Looking ahead

The Plastic Out programme highlights the power of collaboration across regions and supply chains in achieving meaningful sustainability progress. By aligning with this global strategy, RS South Africa ensures that local customers benefit from ongoing innovation, expertise, and continuous improvement.

With a strong focus on alternative materials, reducing plastic use, and embedding sustainability into operations, RS is progressing toward a more circular and responsible packaging model—one that supports both environmental goals and long-term business performance.
