Acquisition expands Saica’s presence in Central and Eastern Europe while reinforcing its position in the sustainable corrugated packaging market

Spanish paper and packaging manufacturer Saica Group has agreed to acquire German packaging company Thimm Group, a leading producer of sustainable corrugated packaging and display solutions. The transaction marks a significant step in Saica’s European expansion strategy and is expected to strengthen its footprint across key packaging markets in Central and Eastern Europe.

Founded in 1949, Thimm Group has built a strong presence in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania, employing around 2,500 people and operating a corrugated packaging production capacity of approximately 1.2 billion square metres annually. The company generated revenues of about €539 million in 2024.

Saica Group, headquartered in Zaragoza, Spain, is one of Europe’s leading paper and packaging manufacturers. The family-owned company operates more than 100 facilities across Europe and the United States and reported revenues of nearly €4 billion in 2025, supported by a workforce of more than 12,000 employees.

The acquisition brings together two long-established family-owned businesses with complementary geographic footprints. While Saica has a strong presence in Western Europe, Thimm provides access to important markets in Germany and Eastern Europe, enabling the combined group to offer broader regional coverage and enhanced customer support across the continent.

According to the companies, Thimm’s existing operational structures will continue following the acquisition, ensuring continuity for customers, employees, and business partners. The two firms already share a long-standing relationship that includes a strategic sales alliance and a joint venture in Poland, which is expected to support a smoother integration process.

Industry observers view the deal as part of a broader consolidation trend within the European corrugated packaging sector, where manufacturers are seeking greater scale, investment capacity, and operational efficiency to address increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. The combined strengths of Saica and Thimm are expected to enhance their ability to invest in digitalisation, automation, and circular economy initiatives.

The acquisition remains subject to approval from the relevant antitrust authorities, and the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Once completed, the deal will create a stronger European packaging group with expanded capabilities in corrugated packaging, paper-based solutions, and sustainable packaging innovation.
