Sustainable paper, pulp, and packaging solutions provider Sappi has introduced its complete range of heat-sealable paper solutions, expanding on the functional packaging papers it launched earlier this year.

The new portfolio is aimed at converters, printers, and brand owners seeking fibre-based alternatives to plastic packaging.

The Seal range—comprising Seal Silk, Seal G Silk, Seal Pure Silk, Seal Natural, Seal Light, and Seal Lucent—has been developed to cater to a wide variety of applications and sealing requirements, while enabling smooth integration into existing packaging lines. With multiple finishes and features, including OBA-free and translucent options, the portfolio allows users to select grades suited to their packaging formats, production processes, and visual preferences.

The launch comes at a time when companies are facing increasing regulatory pressure, particularly from policies such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, alongside rising consumer demand for recyclable packaging. Despite this shift, maintaining consistent sealing performance and managing total cost of ownership remain key considerations for businesses transitioning away from plastics.

According to Sappi, the Seal portfolio has been specifically designed to address these challenges by enabling a move from plastic and composite materials to mono-material paper solutions without compromising performance or efficiency.

Each grade within the range supports different production setups, printing technologies, visual requirements, and sealing strengths. Seal Silk and Seal G Silk are available in grammages ranging from 50 gsm to 110 gsm and offer low-to-medium water vapour barrier performance, compatible with flexographic and gravure printing methods. Seal Pure Silk, available in 67 gsm, is OBA-free, making it suitable for applications requiring a more natural appearance. Seal Natural, at 95 gsm, delivers strong sealing strength and excellent hot-tack properties.

The Seal Light variants—Light Gloss and Light Natural—are offered in 54 gsm and 44 gsm respectively, supporting flexo and gravure printing, with the Light Natural option also being OBA-free and lightweight. Meanwhile, Seal Lucent is designed for applications that benefit from a translucent finish.

Commenting on the development, Michael Bethge noted that brand owners, converters, and printers are increasingly looking for reliable ways to transition their packaging without incurring additional risks or costs. He emphasized the need for practical, flexible solutions supported by technical expertise, adding that the Seal range has been developed in response to such industry feedback.
