Label Academy Launches RFID Fundamentals Guide for Connected Packaging

The Label Academy has launched RFID Fundamentals, a new technical guide designed to help label converters, package printers and brand owners understand RFID technology and explore its growing role in connected packaging.

Published by the Label Academy, the guide provides a practical, end-to-end introduction to radio frequency identification (RFID), covering the technology’s applications across label and package printing.

RFID Fundamentals was developed by the editorial team behind Labels & Labeling, the global label and package printing industry publication, in collaboration with Loupe Global’s portfolio editorial team.

The book was written by Andy Thomas-Emans, Strategic Director at Loupe Global, and edited by Chelsea McDougall, Editor of Labels & Labeling.

The guide covers key aspects of RFID implementation, including how RFID technology works, selecting the appropriate label construction, encoding, quality control and the role of systems integrators. It is intended to help converters, suppliers and brands assess RFID opportunities and implement projects more effectively.

The publication also aims to connect traditional label-converting expertise with the growing demand for connected packaging and data-driven supply chains.

Andy Thomas-Emans said RFID presents significant opportunities for label and package printing converters to develop new revenue streams. He also acknowledged the contribution of participants from the RFID Masterclass held at Labelexpo Americas 2024, along with industry organisations that supported the development of the guide.

Dr Vlad Sljapic, Strategic Partnerships Director at Watermill Press and a contributor to the book, said the commercial side of RFID is as important as its technical aspects. He highlighted the importance of understanding the traceability requirements of different stakeholders within brands and communicating the value of RFID accordingly.

The publication was produced with sponsorship from Delta Modtech and is now available for purchase through Amazon.

RFID Fundamentals will also be available at Loupe Americas 2026, formerly Labelexpo Americas, which will take place from 15–17 September 2026 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.

The new guide adds to the Label Academy’s growing library of technical resources aimed at supporting the label and package printing industry as it adopts emerging technologies and connected packaging solutions.
