Mondi and FIXIT GRUPPE standardise paper bag packaging across Europe, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂.

As one of Europe’s leading system providers for building materials, FIXIT GRUPPE supplies a wide range of products to DIY stores across the region. In line with its sustainability strategy, FIXIT GRUPPE set out to simplify its paper bag packaging portfolio across European markets. Following an expert audit and close collaboration with FIXIT GRUPPE teams, Mondi developed a unified paper bag portfolio for more than 100 building material products that supports recycling and helps lower greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ compared to the previous year.

This collaboration reflects Mondi’s focus on circulardriven solutions through packaging design that supports recyclability and resource efficiency.

The challenge: managing a diverse packaging portfolio across European markets

FIXIT GRUPPE offers more than 100 building material products, each with specific packaging requirements influenced by product characteristics, climate conditions and local regulations. Over time, this resulted in a fragmented portfolio of paper bag grades and formats across European markets.

This complexity made it challenging to:

  • apply a consistent packaging approach across markets
  • support progress against its sustainability targets

FIXIT GRUPPE required a packaging solution that would:

  • protect powdered building materials
  • function reliably on existing filling machinery
  • align with its climate and resource-efficiency objectives

The solution: a standardised paper bag portfolio developed with Mondi’s integrated expertise

Mondi carried out an expert audit at its Bag Application Centre in Frantschach, Austria, where specialists reviewed FIXIT GRUPPE’s existing packaging portfolio.

The assessment focused on

  • paper grammage
  • barrier requirements
  • thickness of the plastic inner layer (plastic reduction potential)

Based on this analysis, Mondi and FIXIT GRUPPE worked together to define a unified portfolio of standardised paper bag formats designed to meet the needs of different building materials and European markets. As a backward-integrated producer, Mondi supplied sack kraft paper from its own mills and delivered paper valve bags that provide the required moisture protection while supporting efficient and reliable filling on FIXIT GRUPPE’s machinery.

The bags are designed to support recycling and were assessed using the 4evergreen fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.

This project shows how we help customers solve complex packaging challenges while reducing environmental impact. By analysing FIXIT GRUPPE’s full product range and applying our papermaking and converting expertise, we developed a standardised solution without compromising on performance. It is also a great example of how close collaboration with customers can unlock long-term value across their packaging portfolio.”

The outcome: consistent performance and lower greenhouse gas emissions

By standardising its paper bag portfolio in collaboration with Mondi, FIXIT GRUPPE achieved measurable environmental and operational benefits across its European operations. These results support FIXIT GRUPPE’s sustainability strategy and contribute to climate action through lower associated emissions.

The results speak for themselves:

• A unified paper bag portfolio for more than 100 building material products
• A simpler and more consistent packaging approach across European markets
• A reduction of 135 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, compared to the previous year

In addition, FIXIT GRUPPE now benefits from a simpler and more consistent packaging portfolio across European markets, while maintaining the protection and reliable performance required across its product range. This reinforces FIXIT GRUPPE’s sustainability strategy and supports climate action through improved resource efficiency.

We needed packaging that protects a wide range of building materials, is practical on construction sites and supports our climate strategy. Mondi assessed everything thoroughly and worked closely with our teams to improve functionality, sustainability and quality requirements.”

Working towards a more sustainable packaging future

Through expert auditing, integrated paper and converting capabilities, and close customer collaboration, Mondi supported FIXIT GRUPPE in moving towards a more standardised and resourceefficient packaging approach. The project illustrates how collaboration with empowered teams and targeted packaging improvements can contribute to circulardriven solutions and climate action, aligned with Mondi’s 2030 sustainability commitments.
