Forty Thousand Pounds at Floor Level: Superlift’s Improved Roll Handler Moves Large Paper Rolls Without the Crane

A paper roll is heavy and fragile at the same time: crush a core or nick an edge and a good roll turns into scrap.

Superlift South Inc. has introduced its new and improved roll-handling line for the paper industry, anchored by its Electric Paper Roll & Coil Handler, rated for loads up to 40,000 lb. One walk-behind machine picks a large roll up, drives it where it belongs and sets it down — at floor level, with one operator, without tying up an overhead crane or a forklift.

The handler is built around the roll. Adjustable positioning roll flaps cradle the roll in transit, and tapered pallet roll forks spot it without damage — no crushed cores, no torn edges. The all-steel chassis carries a high-torque AC drive — single or dual — with power steering, electric braking and a programmable Curtis controller. It works low: a 4-inch lowered height and 9-inch raised height, an 82.2-inch overall width and 75.5-inch fork width, and an 85-inch turning radius. Power is a 24-volt or 48-volt battery with 3 kW drive and 3 kW lift motors, in walk-behind or walkie rider versions.

“Anybody in paper knows a roll is two problems at once,” said Gerry Erwin, president of Superlift South Inc. “It can weigh as much as a truck, and one careless lift can ruin it. We built this handler so one operator can pick a big roll up, cradle it, drive it where it belongs and set it down clean — no crane, no forklift, no crushed cores, no waiting. Forty thousand pounds, handled gently. That is the whole idea.”

The improved roll-handling line is at www.superlift.net, and Superlift engineers custom configurations to order.
