UK-based Isle of Wight Tomatoes has introduced a redesigned 1.5 kg corrugated tomato punnet in partnership with Smurfit Kappa Gosport to improve product protection during transport and enhance shelf appeal.
The redesign follows transport issues with the company’s previous punnet, where an ill-fitting lid caused damage to tomatoes during distribution. Working closely with Smurfit Kappa Gosport, the company developed a new corrugated “lattice box” featuring diamond-shaped ventilation holes that improve airflow, helping reduce the risk of fungal growth while providing better protection throughout the supply chain.
Alongside the structural improvements, the new packaging introduces refreshed branding with a vibrant yellow exterior and a star-shaped logo inspired by a tomato calyx. The updated design aims to strengthen product visibility on retail shelves while reflecting the company’s new brand identity.
According to the companies, the new corrugated cardboard packaging replaces the previous punnet format, offering improved durability and aligning with growing consumer demand for more environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
