UPM Specialty Materials and Felix Schoeller have jointly developed a customizable, recyclable barrier solution tailored for flexible food packaging applications such as chocolate and snack bars.
Created in response to rising demand for sustainable packaging, the food-safe, fiber-based solution aligns with upcoming recyclability requirements under the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The collaboration focuses on meeting diverse packaging needs by offering adjustable levels of barrier protection. Built on UPM’s Solide Lucent packaging paper, the solution allows Felix Schoeller to fine-tune barrier properties based on specific product requirements.
According to Andreas Bergmeier, Head of Innovation & Technical Sales Packaging at Felix Schoeller, the approach begins with customer needs rather than fixed technologies. The company develops customized coating solutions that provide protection against oxygen, moisture, and grease, while also ensuring strong sealing and mechanical performance. He noted that Solide Lucent serves as an excellent base material due to its reliable runnability, balanced strength, and high-quality printability.
